The primary governing body of the Association for Laboratory Phonology is the 11-member Executive Council, which consists of three appointed Councilors (who serve ex officio for their roles as the Chief Editor of the Association journal or as a representative from the organizing committee for either the previous or the upcoming LabPhon meeting), four Councilors who are elected to serve in a particular office (the President, the Vice-President/President-Elect, the Secretary, and the Treasurer), and four elected Councilors-at-Large.
Terms of office
The (renewable) term for the Chief Editor of Laboratory Phonology originally was five years, as specified in the original bylaws that were filed when the Association was incorporated as a non-profit organization, as well as in the contract with Mouton de Gruyter, the original publisher. It currently is three years, as specified in the bylaws as amended in 2016, when the journal moved to Ubiquity Press, the current publisher. (During this transition between publishers, there was a brief period when both the outgoing Chief Editor and the incoming Chief Editor participated in meetings of the Executive Council.)
The other ten Councilors typically serve on the Executive Council for four years, with terms specified so that five of them are replaced by newly appointed or newly elected Councilors at each meeting of the members of the Association that is held during the biennial LabPhon conference. Specifically, the appointed representative of the previous LabPhon meeting steps off of the Executive Council (to be replaced by the appointed representative of the current LabPhon meeting); the President steps off the Executive Council (to be replaced by the Vice-President / President Elect who was elected just before the previous LabPhon meeting); and the schedule of elections of the remaining Councilors is specified so that the onsets of the terms of two Councilors-at-Large and of the Treasurer are staggered relative to the onsets of the terms of the other two Councilors-at-Large and of the Secretary, respectively.
This arrangement of overlapping terms results in a transition from one group of Councillors to a different group of Councillors every two years. The groups who have served since the founding of the Association in 2010 are listed in the following sections.
